Project
Synopsis

Project name: Malpas Alport Primary School Extension

Contract: JCT D&B 2011

Value: £1,445,000

Duration: 39 Weeks

Summary:

£1.4m design and build scheme comprising of several extension areas as well as the main new teaching block. The quiet village setting and congested site required scaffold ramps to access the kitchen extension. Segregated access and controlled shared routes were carefully managed in collaboration with the school staff.

LIAISON – The constrained site and shared access routes required significant management of the supply chain, which was successfully completed through close liaison with the school and the management of strict access and egress restrictions. Our team maintained a close collaborative working relationship throughout the project with all stakeholders. The resulting handover questionnaire feedback from the staff resulted in 100% positive response for all aspects including on time delivery, management of the works, quality and snag resolution, as well as 100% satisfaction with the Read team.

SAVINGS – Throughout the project, the Quantity Surveyor worked closely with our Design Manager to ensure the design sat within the budget constraints. Ongoing options review through the construction process identified opportunities for saving against the contract sum through supply chain innovation – generated over £12k savings without detriment to quality or functionality.

  • Sarah Worthington, Head Teacher - Malpas Alport Endowed Primary School

I would formally like to pass on my thanks to Read Construction for the refurbishment and extension work carried out at my school. The finished results are amazing – giving the school the much needed space in order to expand. Please pass on my sincere thanks and appreciation to the whole team who were responsible for delivering such a successful project.

I would like to put on record my thanks to your Site Manager (Phil Molyneux), on what has been, at times, a difficult and taxing project. His efforts, in achieving not only the finished product but also going the extra mile, over and above what is expected are very much appreciated. His professionalism and empathy for the views of our stakeholders has, without doubt, played the lead in the delivery of this fantastic outcome and I thank Phil for this. Communication between Phil and school was excellent.

A great team. Very well led! It was a pleasure to have you all on site for the last 12 months.

  • Liz Micklehwaite, Local Resident

I have been fascinated watching the building work progress, I think it looks fantastic and a great new building for Malpas.

The building team have shared with me the progress, challenges etc. and are always extremely courteous and informative.

  • Rob Gilhooley, Senior Project Officer, Major Projects and Capital Delivery Team – Cheshire West and Chester Council

I worked with Phill at Malpas Alport Endowed Primary School and have nothing but good things to say about him. Phill was very proactive in ensuring that the build was delivered to a high quality within the given timescales.

Health and safety of the pupils was always at the forefront of his thinking and Phill ensured that disruption to the teaching and learning within the school was kept to an absolute minimum.

I built a very good working relationship with Phill and have the confidence that should the opportunity arrive for him to work with the Council again, that the project would be in more than capable hands.
