Synopsis
Project name: Wrexham Tennis Centre
Contract: JCT Intermediate
Value: £480,000
Duration: 20 weeks
Summary:
Extension to increase the indoor and outdoor training capacity of one of the UK’s most successful tennis centres. The existing facility remained open and fully functional during the extension project, which handed over ahead of the centre’s competition season.
In September 2009, Read Construction Holdings Ltd completed a £500,000 facility enhancement project at the North Wales Regional Tennis Centre. The project added an outdoor court, two Mini Red indoor courts and another full sized indoor court to the existing six outdoor and six indoor courts.
The extent of work and planning required to build the outdoor court was sizeable, given the amount of earth that had to be removed to build the new court at the same level as the existing. Additionally, the new outdoor court was being built closer to houses at the rear of the site, which would inevitably cause some disruption to local residents, so planning and communication between Read’s site manager Lee Bell and ourselves, as well as with residents and the local council, was of the utmost importance. As expected, there were some issues that arose throughout the three month build but Lee dealt with them all very professionally and the whole team took on the job with the needs of the residents in mind so as to cause as little disturbance to them as possible.
The project was completed on time and within budget and Lee led his team throughout the project with great efficiency and enthusiasm. Of particular importance to us was the impact that building the new indoor courts would have on the existing tennis programme. As a not-for-profit business, the Tennis Centre could not afford to shut down its activities throughout the build so Read came up with a plan to create the foundations and frame for the extension without taking down the end wall until near the end of the project, which allowed us to use as many courts as possible. Also, considering the number of children that access both the Tennis Centre and the park behind, the provisions for health and safety were impeccable, with strict guidelines given to the construction team and Centre staff alike.
Comments from customers upon completion were all extremely positive and for players who regularly enter the annual international tournaments held here, many of them could not tell what part of the Centre was new, such was the quality of finishing in keeping with the existing structure and colour schemes.
I would strongly recommend Read Construction as a build partner for other projects.
