Summary:

This scheme comprised a new build Sport Science training facility at the Coleg Menai campus in Llangefni. The £6.3m state-of-the-art project includes a brand new sports hall, large gym, changing facilities, 7 Sport Science classrooms, Sports Biometrics laboratories, staff rooms and equipment storage.

This NEC 4 ECC contract for the design and construction of a new Sport Science facility on Grŵp Llandrillo Menai’s Llangefni campus demonstrates Read’s capability to deliver large value, local projects in the spirit of co-operation and collaboration.

The new ‘Canolfan Chwaraeon’ was supported by funding from the Welsh Government’s Sustainable Communities for Learning Programme, which aims to enhance the learning experience of learners, ensuring they are taught in classrooms with the technologies and facilities needed to support the delivery of the Curriculum for Wales.

The project was approached and delivered in true collaboration. Regular formal Design Team Meetings, Early Warning Meetings and Progress Meetings were combined with social media posts, staff walkabouts and daily liaison with the client team.

Outcomes

Having been designed and built with sustainability in mind, Canolfan Chwaraeon is an operational Net Zero Carbon building and has been certified ‘BREEAM Excellent’ – ranking it among the top 10% of buildings in the UK for environmental performance.
